Presbyopia
Presbyopia is caused by the loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens inside the eye. This increased rigidity of the lens results in poor focus on near objects. This typically happens for people in their mid-40’s.
Thankfully, we have many treatment options for presbyopia. Treatments can include reading glasses, magnifiers, progressive lenses, multifocal contact lenses and even some surgical options. And now we have a new eye drop!
What is Vuity?
It is a prescription medication eye drop for the treatment of presbyopia. These eye drops work by causing the muscles of the iris to constrict, causing your pupils to get smaller. A smaller pupil increases the pinhole effect. The pinhole effect can increase your “depth of field” and give you a wider range of clear vision.
Vuity consists of an active ingredient called pilocarpine. Pilocarpine has historically been used as a glaucoma treatment.
Who is Vuity it for?
Vuity was studied largely in th 40’s-mid-50’s, but presbyopia effects everybody differently, so people in their 30’s all the way up to 60’s may qualify.
That said, if you have a really high prescription, you may still need some sort of reading glasses or magnifying glass even with these drops.
The ideal candidate is someone who doesn’t require glasses full time, or someone that is post-LASIK.
Pricing
Unfortunately, at this time, insurance does not cover Vuity. You can expect it to cost about $79 per month.

Here in the US, Vuity is available by prescription only, so you’ll want to reach out to your eye doctor to talk about this medication.
Side Effects
The most common side effect, occurring in about 15% of participants, was headaches, but less than 0.5% of decided the headache was too much to continue use of the medication.
Next, is redness to the eye. And finally, retinal detachment, although it’s only a slightly increased risk, is another important side effect to consider. This side effect is associated with this class of medication, which is a good reason to connect with your doctor to make sure you aren’t at a heightened risk of retinal detachment.
UPDATE: One thing I did not mention in the video above was how Vuity may cause a slight dimming effect in your vision, and because of this, people may have more difficulty with driving at nighttime or in low light situations.
