Have you considered Lipiflow for your dry eyes? Dry eye disease is a common eye disorder that causes dry, burning, red eyes and fluctuating vision. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eye disease, and plays a role in about 86% of cases.

What is Lipiflow?
To begin, Lipiflow is an in-office procedure designed specifically as a dry eye treatment to help with evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.
It essentially heats the meibomian glands to the precise temperature to wear the oil glands will melt. Next, a pumping mechanisms pumps the old thickened oils and expresses them from the glands, allowing for new oils to be made and released with each blink.
Overall, the Lipiflow procedure has overwhelming support in the literature as a safe and effective treatment for both Meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye.
In my opinion, it’s as much as a dry eye treatment as it is a preventative measure to prevent those glands from eventually dying off.
How does Lipiflow work?
First, the doctor will insert numbing drops to make the procedure more comfortable. Then, the eye doctor inserts these devices behind the eyelids. This acts as a safety mechanism and provides direct heat to the inner sides of both eyelids, heating those meibomian glands.
The whole procedure lasts about 12 minutes, which includes the heating and expression of the glands.
How much does Lipiflow cost?
This treatment costs between $700-1500, and unfortunately, most insurance companies, at this time, don’t accept this treatment. This means it will be cash pay for most people seeking this treatment.
Does Lipiflow work?
This is a great treatment option that I wish I could run on more of my patients. Studies show that people can benefit from even just one treatment for more than a year or two. People with severe forms of MGD may benefit from 1 or more treatments per year.
