Ever thought of buying pinhole glasses or eye creams? There are so many videos across YouTube and social media reviewing eye care products and vision products that claim to help the eyes see better and feel better.
Unfortunately, many of these products don’t actually provide any benefits whatsoever, and some may even hurt you in the long run.
It’s time to put an end to that.
Let’s review eye care products, eye drops, glasses and devices that you should avoid.
Pinhole Glasses
These glasses are “supposed” to be glasses with tiny holes in them that help you see better without glasses. The concept of using a pinhole to improve your vision is true. You can test this out by creating a small pinhole with your hand and looking through it. We even have tools that use this concept to help us see what types of vision issues you may have.
But these pinhole glasses do NOT actually improve your vision. In fact, you can hardly see out of them!
Eye Drops for Whiter Eyes
Any eye drop claiming it will “get the red out” is NOT good for your eyes, and they can actually do more damage to your eyes than good. That’s because they have an ingredient in them that constricts your blood vessels, and the problem is that they cause a rebound effect making your eyes more red so that you need the drops even more. These drops can also mask problems with your eyes that we need to see in the clinic!
Red eyes indicate that they’re irritated or that there is a problem. It may not look good, but it’s showing us that there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
The preservatives in these drops are also very harsh and can cause damage to the glands in the eyelids leading to severe forms of dry eye.

Rhoto Eye Drops
These are eye drops that have menthol in them. Studies have shown this may not be a good idea. These drops are marketed to gamers and people staring at their screens for long periods of time. And this makes sense; these people are blinking less!
Menthol, which does have a cooling effect, also causes desensitization, which studies show can lead to permanent tear reduction, making dry eye even worse.

Eye Massagers
Electronic massagers don’t get warm enough to effectively heat the glands in the eyelids. And although the massaging does feel good, it doesn’t push on the eye correctly, and could even push on the eye too much causeing more harm than good. There are way more warm compresses out there with better effectiveness, and better options for treating dry eyes in your clinic rather than spending your money on these items.
Eye Color Changing Eye Drops
Color changing eye drops sold online-do NOT trust those!
There is an eye drop for glaucoma to lower pressure, and a side effect is that it can make lighter eyes appear more hazel or brown, but these same eye drops can change the fat deposition around the eyes, making your eyes appear more sunken in.
If you really want to change your eye color, there are some great colored contacts, though watch out for the bad ones marketed out there especially around Halloween. To hear more about these, check out this video: https://youtu.be/DwxHKMmiGzo
Eye Cream
While eye creams can help temporarily , they don’t cure the actual problem. And the bigger issue is that many creams have ingredients in them that can cause more damage to the eyes. They can cause severe ocular surface disease and dry eyes.
Cheap Blue Light Glasses
Most of the blue light glasses sold for $20 or so, the THey don’t report the right amount of bue light that they’re blocking.
There is some turth to lue light impacting your sleep cycle, but we are still waiting to see more studies to see if it’s impacting eye strain and retinol damage.
There are some good quality blue light glasses out there that have research behind them, blocking out the correct amount and type of blue light. I do wear blue light glasses myself, and if you want to learn more about blue light and blue light glasses, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list…
As Seen on TV Glasses
Have you seen glasses for reading up close or driving sunglasses marketed on tv? None of these really work. They’re really just made as a novelty item, and there are better ways to address close up reading and driving issues.

Red Light & Green Light Glasses
While some studies have implicated that red light shining can help with retina health, there are NOT enough studies to show that this will be effective on human eyes. We are far from recommending options like this.
While colored lights may also impact our mood, there just isn’t enough research to really stand behind these items.
