How to Deal with Eye Strain and Computer Vision Syndrome

If you have been experiencing increased eye strain symptoms from being on digital devices, then you could have digital eye strain from computer vision syndrome. These eye strain symptoms often include dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and neck pain.

Here are 5 tips to help with eye strain relief from computer vision syndrome.

  1. Take Frequent Breaks
The first tip is to take frequent breaks, and the 20/20/20 rule can help! The rule is simply this: every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break looking 20 feet away.
  2. Adjust Your Screen Position
Adjusting your computer screen can also help. Your computer screen should arm’s length away and at the right eye level. In addition, turn your screen to minimize any reflections from windows or lights around you.
  3. Adjust the Settings of your Screen
Adjust the setting of your device to minimize the impact on your eyes. This includes increasing or decreasing your font and adjusting the brightness and color of your screen. Some devices also have a night light or blue light mode setting, which will adjust the level of blue light being emitted from your device, something very important at night time!
  4. Manage Dry Eye Symptoms
If you find yourself at a screen frequently, managing your dry eye symptoms is important. Blink rate decreases dramatically when focusing on your device, so to combat this, try to blink more often or use eye drops when needed.
  5. Eye Exercises
A simple eye exercise allows your eyes to rest, but even looking at objects in the distance will help relieve some strain. Check out the video below for a few simple eye exercises you can try at your desk!
